Things in themselves are void, so never cling to Voidness lest you stray [into] formalism.
--Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa

What does this mean? What is formalism in this sense?

Hi,

My own prehaps confused understanding goes a little like...

I think it has to do with the way moving mind likes to concretize things for easier quicker recongnition. So there is this basic notion of "tree", the eye sense brings in data, moving mind looks in the files, categorizes it and places the data where its deemed most useful, then doesn't bother much with it after that. Sometmes moving mind is wrong like the classic example of the rope snake. The ~void~ is infinite potential, not nothingness. If moving mind tucks ~void~ away into some file it has become a "thing" and no longer has infinite potential or room for much exploration. But this is what moving mind wants to do because it gets overwhelmed by the notion of infinite potential.
