Hello newbie on board
Hi,
New here...been following buddhism for a year or so..mainly Tibetan.... I discovered this wonderful forum whilst browsing the net. But I have of late have some concerns and was wondering if anyone here knows anything about some one called Mike Roach? I was originally impressed very much with his teachings on Buddhism but then noticed he had a Girlfriend  who he claims to be a Dakini ???? So the the more i looked into this Guy ...I dont know ....he seems a bit phony to me...has anyone else noticed this? He seems quite persuasive on initial analysis(usual cult phsycology IMO), but digging a bit more he seems he a bit power hungry and downright kooky? Just my analysis so far but would love to hear your opinions.....like I said its been really bugging me of late....he seems to have a lot of blind followers who hold him in high esteem...but seem to be being misled...thats bad Karmafor lots of people involved IMO
Thanks Guys

Re: Hello newbie on board
Welcome Precious terma! I'm glad you found The Buddhist Lounge.
I'd be happy to provide you with some information about Michael Roach. I will return with more and perhaps someone else will see this thread in the meantime.
Great questions, please make yourself at home!

From their site.
Geshe Michael and Lama Christie founded Star in the East (SIE) with the
intention to reinvigorate the Wisdom branch of Christianity. Inspired by new
translations of the Gospels of Thomas and the New Testament, SIE teaches
the principles of Karma and Emptiness to a Christian minded audience. SIE
workshops offer authentic training in Deep Prayer and Meditation to help
people become more Christ-like beings and enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
SIE is based in Tucson, Arizona and New York City.

Yes I think many also were impressed with this gentleman at the start. But as I recall something happened out in the desert whilst he was supposed to be on a solitary three year retreat. He did in fact have this lady Mcnally in his Yurt that they had made for him at that time.
I shall see if I can post something about that, as that seemed to be a turning point.

Geshe Michael Roach Interview
An Interview with Geshe Michael Roach and Christie McNally
Interview by T. Monkyi with Geshe Michael Roach after Easter 2003 teachings
Question: I thought it would be useful to have this interview
with you, Geshe la, and you Christie hla, just because there might be
some confusion in terms of the form that you’re taking as you come
out of retreat, the aspect, since it’s not really usual in our tradition,
the Gelukpa tradition, and there might be questions in people’s
minds about it, and we thought it might be useful to air people’s
concerns a little and see what you have to say about questions that people
might have. In particular during your last series of teachings, a number
of letters were circulated to students including a poem written by you
describing your spiritual life and in particular your realization of emptiness.
In addition you mentioned that you had been staying in retreat with a
lady, and that you had changed your appearance to reflect a change in
status concerning your practice and personal life.
As you can imagine, some of these things have brought up a number of
questions amongst your direct students, and will undoubtedly raise a stir
in the dharma world, east and west. So I guess the first question is,
why did you decide to come out with this publicly?

Re: Hello newbie on board
I read a lot about this a while ago, and I believe HHDL has asked him to cease his activities or else disrobe. HHDL asked him to stop living with his girlfriend and wearing robes at the same time.
But some of this oddness goes deeper than that.

I think it is always helpful to maintain a skeptical view on lamas and teachers. There is an old saying that not all students are ignorant, and not all Lamas are realized!
Even the Buddha Shakyamuni spent time with various teachers, often to reject their teachings.
It does not mean our journey is up! Or we have to commit to just one teacher.
